Vignolo’s frescoes

Vignolo’s frescoes

Between culture and art

The historic center of Vignolo preserves the original medieval structure in which some houses with interesting 15th-century decorations stand out.

Among the most interesting dwellings is the Farmhouse on Nittardi Street, where there are frescoed panels from the first decade of the 16th century. A Madonna and Child, a window with floral decorations, and the figure of a knight, identifiable in the martyred saint of the Theban Legion Maurice, are noted. In this panel is the crusader shield documenting the territory’s subservience to the House of Savoy that began in 1382 and was reaffirmed in 1569.

The fresco of the Madonna and Child on Umberto I Street dates from the last decade of the 15th century, and is inserted in one of two aediculae carved into the sides of a driveway. Jesus’ face and the Virgin’s mando are illegible, and the whole is disfigured by the later insertion of a plaster frame. An attempt at an illusionistic rendering of space with windows open to a landscape stands out in the background.
